Festa della Repubblica 2024

Festa della Repubblica (English: Republic Day) is the Italian National Day and Republic Day, which is celebrated on 2 June each year, with the main celebration taking place in Rome. The Festa della Repubblica is one of the national symbols of Italy.

The day commemorates the 1946 Italian institutional referendum held by universal suffrage, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government following the Second World War and the fall of Fascism.

The ceremony of the event, organized in Rome, includes the deposition of a laurel wreath as a tribute to the Italian Unknown Soldier at the Altare della Patria by the President of the Italian Republic and a military parade along Via dei Fori Imperiali in Rome.

Le Frecce Tricolore

At 3 PM, military planes were flying above the center of the town, spreading the colors of Italian flag, green, white and red across the sky.

To celebrate the 'Festa Della Republica', which is the national day of Italy, these planes are arranged to fly over various cities everyday, until the 2nd of June which they will fly over Rome.

Today, they flew over Torino and from my balcony, I could clearly see them flying across.

Lots of people who didn't want to miss the event gathered in the piazzas and via Po, all the way until the Gran Madre Church which is across the river, to view the event. Of course nobody was obeying the restriction of safety distance.

Festa della Repubblica 2016

Festa della Repubblica ( in English, Republic Day ) is the Italian National Day and Republic Day, which is celebrated on 2 June each year. The day commemorates the institutional referendum held by universal suffrage in 1946, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government, following the Second World War and the fall of Fascism. With 12,717,923 votes for a republic and 10,719,284 for the monarchy, the male descendants of the House of Savoy were sent into exile.

To commemorate it, a grand military parade is held in central Rome, presided over by the President of the Italian Republic in his role as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. The Prime Minister, formally known as the President of the Council of Ministers, and other high officers of state also attend.

There are important celebrations in all the Italian embassies and foreign heads of state are invited. Even though the main parade is in Rome, many Italian cities celebrate the day as well.

Prior to the foundation of the Republic, the Italian national day was the first Sunday in June, anniversary of the granting of the Statuto Albertino. Until 1977, this was the date of the celebrations for the 1948 foundation of the republic. The 2 June date became official in 2000.

The ceremony in Turin holds in piazza Castello, with attendance of various uniform group and the mayor and other governor representative.

The ceremony interests mostly the older generations who are most likely sing along whenever the national anthem is played.
