Raining Dogs And Cats

Finally the rain arrived, after one night and one day of raining dogs and cats, the temperature reduced from 38 °C to maximum of 19 °C and a minimum of 13 °C.

From the photos, it doesn't seem to be raining heavily, but during the night it was rather violent and throughout the day, it switched between drizzling and pouring.

Dog Days

It is so hot, the temperature reaches 38 °C at 1700 hours and feels like 40 °C.

Prediction is that by Saturday the temperature will decrease when the rain comes in.

Let's hope it is true.

Meanwhile, people are starting to strip off on the streets to fight off the heat.

Lunch At Pian della Mussa

During the 4 days short vacation at Ceres, we drove up to Pian Della Mussa to have lunch.

Pian della Mussa is a locality located at 1,850 m at the end of the Val d'Ala in the Lanzo valleys. It is a vast plateau more than 2 km long formed by the filling of a glacial lake. Located in the province of Turin, in the municipality of Balme, the Stura di Lanzo river is born here, a left tributary of the Po.

The homonymous aqueduct begins from Pian della Mussa which, at least in the past, was the largest aqueduct serving the city of Turin. The springs were purchased in 1896 when Felice Rignon was mayor of Turin. The construction works, which also included the construction of the driveway from Balme, began about a decade later, due to the numerous disputes that arose with the inhabitants of the valleys regarding ownership and rights over the water. After the suspension during the war, the aqueduct reached Turin and was inaugurated on 24 June 1922. The water from the Pian della Mussa springs has been part of the supplies of the International Space Station since 2008. There is a complex of sacred works and commemorative plaques on the plateau, including the 'Madonna del Bersagliere' commissioned by Biagio Augusto Zaffiri and the work of the sculptor Ruffini of Cremona. There is also the Città di Cirié Refuge and other summer camp houses, as well as numerous restaurants where you can taste the typical products of the valleys. The asphalted access road is closed to traffic during the winter.

Ceres Train Station

Ceres station is the terminus railway station of the Turin-Ceres railway. It serves the municipality of Ceres and the adjacent municipality of Cantoira.

Built like all the stations of the mountain section of the railway according to the project of Eng. Alberto Scotti in 1915, is a three-storey masonry and reinforced concrete building with a wooden pitched roof and cover, rebuilt in the early 2000s in Lose.

Similarly to other stations of the line, on the ground floor of the station, built in Art Nouveau style following the model of the "Swiss chalet", there is a large entrance with ticket office, waiting rooms for the first (equipped with a stove for winter heating) and second class, the luggage deposit office and the station master's office, while the upper floors house the accommodation.

The station is devoid of rail traffic. Until June 2023 served by four pairs of trains of line A of the SFM, i.e. the Ceres-Turin Dora station section; during the summer school closures the trains stopped in Germagnano, being replaced by buses.

Bridge Of Vana

There are two bridges in Ceres, one old and one new. Both are named Ponte della Vana, the old one is an ancient bridge built on the rocks and surrounded by woods.

And this is the bridge in the hamlet of Vana, which for almost 300 years has crossed the Stura, the main stream of the Valli di Lanzo. With the characteristic humpback structure, it was built in stone in 1740.

4 days In Ceres

Ceres is a comune (municipality) in the Metropolitan City of Turin in the Italian region Piedmont, located about 35 kilometres (22 mi) northwest of Turin. The municipality is located in the Valli di Lanzo, at the confluence of the Val grande di Lanzo and the Val d'Ala, north-west of the Piedmontese capital.

Went up to Ceres for a few days to escape from the heat and to have a change of scenery.

The town thrives on residential tourism, due to the presence of many houses used as second homes, with the inhabitants coming from the Turin area, especially in the summer.

There are a few interesting strutures, such as:

-    Parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

-    Sanctuary of Santa Cristina

-   Romanesque bell tower of Santa Marcellina, with a square base, 21 meters high, survivor of a        parish complex which collapsed due to a landslide

-   Grande Albergo Miravalle, built in 1870 to accommodate tourism in the town and functioning     until 1978. It currently appears as a fenced-in ruin, awaiting a complete renovation or a long-       awaited functional reconversion.
