Up To The Bell Tower

Finally, we made it up to the bell tower of the Cathedral, San Giovanni Church.

It was not because of the 200 plus steps that we had to climb, but just couldn't find the right time to pay a visit and also it opens only from Friday to Monday, and also it was closed due to the Covid.

The bell tower was built between 1468 and 1469 by the bishop Giovanni de Compey. In the lower part it has frames without arches, in the first order there are single-lancet windows with pointed arches, decorated with terracotta tile.

Recently restored, the bell tower is part of the tour of the Diocesan Museum. The bell tower was built in the second half of the fifteenth century by the will of the bishop Giovanni di Compey to accompany the bishop's complex then existing.

Between 1720 and 1722 the court architect Filippo Juvarra worked on the crowning and the dome, but the works were interrupted before the latter was built. The tower thus took on its present appearance: a brick construction that ends with a baroque belfry in stucco and stone.

Thanks to the underground gallery that connects the Tower to the Lower Church of the Duomo, it is possible to access it and reach the belfry, over 43 meters high. From the top it is possible to admire an exceptional panorama: the city of Turin seen from above, surrounded by the Alps.

Reflected In Royal Garden

Part of the Royal Garden is still under renovation since closeing it's gate to public in the year 2000.

Still, it is rather nice to take a walk in the other part which is opened to public, especially in these hot days. 

The occasionally pour doesn't actually reduce the heat, but it does leave over some pond of water here and there ideal for making photo of reflection.

Under Different Lights

After 21 years of restoration, the cupola of the Duomo of Turin has finally reopened to pubblic viewing.
It was damaged by fire in 1997, progress of the restoration was extremely slow, explanation is that the original materials were hard to find and replace.

On the night of the re-opening, the cupola was shown in different colored lights. Personally, I found it beautiful, but some other people thought that it was horrible....

Looking down from a building at via San Domenico, the church San Domenico is just below with its bell tower at the back, the big cupola of another church, Basilica Mauriziana is visible on the othern side across via Milano....2 different churches with 2 different styles.

Encountered this fun view on the way home from a walk, a plane was flying in between the cupola of the churche Basilica Mauriziana.

Up Stairs To The Cupola Of Superga

Been to Superga many time, but this was the first time going up the the cupola of the church to have a look. The view was beautiful, but what caught more of my attention was the spiral stairs going up and down.

A panorama view from the dome of the Basilica of Superga....

The entrance to the Ascent to the dome is inside the Basilica of Superga.

A spiral staircase of 131 steps will take you on the balcony outside the dome, where you can view down and admire the view of the city with its valleys and mountains. In particular, on clear days, you'll notice some of the major mountains of the Alps, as the Monviso, the Group dell'Orsiera, Rocciamelone, the Gran Paradiso, the group of the Apostles, the Tower of Lavina, and the Monte Rosa.
