Pigeons On The Sword

This is the equestrian monument dedicated to Ferdinand of Savoy-Genoa It can be admired in the center of the Solferino square, it was built in bronze in 1877 by the sculptor Alfonso Balzico, and dedicated to Ferdinand of Savoy, Duke of Genoa, depicted with his sword drawn and his horse wounded, in memory of the bloody battle of Novara (known as " della Bicocca") of 23 March 1849, in strenuous defense from the Austrian invasion during the first Italian war of independence.

It is also a favourite spot in the piazza for the pigeons to hangout.

The Unofficial Name of A Piazza

There are places that the people of Turin usually call by names different from those they have in reality. For example, Piazza Vittorio stands for Piazza Vittorio Veneto just as Corso Vittorio is the abbreviation of Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and there is no risk of making a mistake because everyone knows these names (indeed they often don't know the official one).  

 

One of these places is Piazza Carlina, which is actually Piazza Carlo Emanuele II. Its nickname is so famous and recognized by the inhabitants of the city that a few years ago they started writing it in the maps of Turin instead of its real name.  

 

The square, which is located in the historic center of Turin not far from the Egyptian Museum, was built in 1673, during the second city expansion, designed by the architect Amedeo di Castellamonte. The nickname, with which it was called already in 1600, was given to it by the people of Turin because it was the one with which Carlo Emanuele II of Savoy was called due to his effeminate ways.

The Star In Piazza Castello

Piazza Castello is a beautiful square, often people are too busy admiring the magnificent, majestic, glorious buildings such as the Royal Palace, the Madama Palace and the San Lorenzo Church and don't notice the graphic design of the pavement in the square.

In more or less the center of the square in front of the Royal palace and between the fountains there is a star, not sure what it represents or it is just simply a design, but it does make the square look better.

Piazza Carignano

Piazza Carignano is one of the historical squares of the Sabauda city, pedestrianized. It is surrounded by buildings with Baroque architecture, among which the imposing Palazzo Carignano stands out, one of the major symbols of the Italian Risorgimento. Opposite the latter are the Carignano Theater and some important and historic shops in Turin, such as the famous "Ristorante del Cambio" and the historic "Gelateria Pepino".

The small size (about 88x33 meters), the monumentality of the curvilinear facade of Palazzo Carignano, of which at the back is the other historical Piazza Carlo Alberto, and the nearby presence of prestigious institutions, such as the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, make the square one of the  richest corner of artistic, historical and monumental suggestions of the historical center of the Piedmontese capital.

 At the center of the square stands a statue dedicated to Vincenzo Gioberti.
