San Paolo Skyscraper

The skyscraper will be the site of the Intesa Sanpaolo banking group and will be located in the district of Turin Cit Turin. Once completed, it will be the tallest building in Turin after the Mole.

The project was presented to the City in November 2007, but due to internal differences in the addition of the City of Turin regarding the height of the building in relation to its proximity to the city center, it has been modified making the final height from about 200 to 167.25 m: 25 cm less than the highest building and symbol of the city itself, and the Mole.

A Walk In The Cold Spring

This spring is cold and wet, cold like 6 - 8 °C, not my ideal spring temperature, so a walk in the Royal Garden would need to dress up in winter clothing....

Steam Power Station

With it artistic, metallic outlook, at first I couldn't guess what it is, nevertheless it's appearance is pretty impressive. It is the steam power station for the Polytechnic University of Turin, located at Via Paolo Borsellino.

A Glimpse At Porta Susa

The overdue rebuilt of station Porta Susa is quasi completed, if I remember correctly, the work was started in 2009 and was expected to be completed in 2011, now we are in 2013, the newly rebuilt station is functionable, but there are still works going on. Anyway, the 'completed' is pretty impressive, the structure design is modern and striking, both internally and externally.

This morning the sky was clear, it had been raining for two days, was wondering if the rain will come back later during the day, lets hope the rain is a transition from winter to spring.

Loner In Church

There are too many churches in Italy, or there are lesser and lesser people willing to go to the church? Or I always visited the churches at the low crowded time? I don't know, but most of the time when I go into a church, it is always very empty, except when there is a funeral or a wedding or some special occasions, or if the church is a real 'famous' one.
However, the lack of people does make the church seems more solemn and holy.

Picking Up Fruits At The Market

Everyday at the market at Porta Palazzo, after the stalls closed up, a lot of fruits and vegetables are left on the ground, the cleaners will come and throw them away, more and more often I see people come to pick them up and bring home. Initially, my thought was sad than peoples have to pick up these thrown away food to eat. Then, one day I picked up some melons they left in boxes on the ground, they were so sweet and so edible!

 People throw away too many foods which are edible, they might not look presentable, they might be overly ripened or have some defects, but as long as they are edible, it is a waste just to throw them away.

 Whether or not, due to poverty that these people pick them up and eat them, they are actually doing something good and intelligent. The sellers throw away these fruits and vegetables because it is more convenient and cost saving than to bring them back and store them, so why not just pick them up and consume them, most of them just need some cleaning and they are good to be eaten, and the overly ripened ones are the best.....

 I would continue to pick up throw away fruits at the market, but then one friend told me to just leave them for the people who need them more than me......

Day of Memory and Commitment in memory of all the innocent victims of the Mafia

Turin remember the sacrifice of those who lost their lives fighting against the power of the mafia. More than 900 victims will be remembered, along with family members residing in Piedmont.
Representatives of Regional Institutions, the Province and the City of Turin, the prosecutor of Turin, the Police and the Police were all invited to participate.

 

 

Blossoms

Surprised to see a small area of cherry blossoms along Corso Francesco Ferrucci near the zone of the Polytechnic of Torino, the striking bright pink flowers bring such joy to see, even though it was partly snowing partly raining at that time, the feeling of the arrival of spring was filling in the air....

First Anniversary

365 posts, completed the number of days in  a year, so, Happy Anniversary to 'Torino In My Eyes', in term of number of posts instead of the date. Not sure if I will still post everyday, maybe not, but will surely continue to post, perhaps something new....
I am pretty happy with the blog, although it doesn't get many visitors, but in this area I am not bothered with the number. A huge 'Thank You' to all the visitors and people who care to check on the blog.

Night Of The Late Snow

Wet, snowing/raining Via Garibaldi at night is always a spectacular sight. The long stretch of lights above and the  reflections on the ground plus the lights from shop's windows on both side of the street, providing light from top, bottom, left and right, creating a flashy and sparkling street.....

Time For Gelato Or Not

Just few days ago, seemed like spring has arrived, people were already having gelato (ice creams) on the street, but then a stream of chilling current swept over and the forecast is that tomorrow it might snow.......

In Front Of OGR

OGR, Officine Grandi Riparazioni, more recently renamed Officine Manutenzione Ciclica, o OMC, are structures for the maintenance, renovation and repair of locomotives or carriages damaged by accidents or breakdowns.
Came to this place accidentally while exploring the area along station Porta Susa. Was delighted to see  the statue of Swiss sculptor, Vincenzo Vela and the display of two generations of train in front of OGR.

Villa Della Regina

The Villa della Regina is a palace in the city of Turin, Italy. It was originally built by the House of Savoy in the 17th century.

The original structure was designed in early 1615 by the Italian soldier, architect and military engineer, Ascanio Vitozzi. He died in 1615 and the project was passed over to his collaborators, father and son Carlo and Amedeo di Castellamonte. The original building was built for the Maurice of Savoy during the reign of his brother Victor Amadeus I, Duke of Savoy. The property was built as a private villa with its own vineyard. In 1637 Cardinal Maurice lost his brother and his sister in law Christine Marie of France became Regent of Savoy for her young son. Cardinal Maurice and his brother the Prince of Carignano opposed the Regency and fled to Spain. The property was owned by Maurice who died there in 1657 and willed it to his wife Louise Christine of Savoy who also died there in 1692. At the death of Louise Christine, it passed to Anne Marie d'Orléans, niece of Louis XIV of France wife Victor Amadeus II, Duke of Savoy in 1684.
She used the Vigno when she could. Most of the present décor of the Vigno is from her lifetime. Her husband was the King of Sicily from 1713 till 1720, when he exchanged Sicily with Sardinia. From then on, the building was known as Villa della Regina ("Villa of the Queen"). It was here Anne Marie died in 1728. Anne Marie's eldest daughter Maria Adelaide came here and tried to recreate it at Versailles at the Menagerie.
Polyxena of Hesse-Rotenburg, daughter in law of Anne Marie, did some work in the main saloon of the building when she became the owner of the villa in 1728 at the death of Anne Marie.
Inside there are frescoes and paintings by Giovanni Battista Crosato, Daniel Seyter and Corrado Giaquinto in the main room, grotesques of Filippo Minei and paintings by the brothers Domenico and Giuseppe Valeriani in the near rooms; there are also precious Chinese Cabinets in lacquer and golden wood. In the park there is the Pavilion of the Solinghi, pagoda building in which the Academy of the Solinghi used to meet; it was a group of intellectuals founded by the Cardinal Maurice.
The Villa was later used by the Spanish Queen of Sardinia Maria Antonietta Ferdinanda. It remained the property of the House of Savoy till 1868 when it was donated by Victor Emmanuel II of Italy to the Institute of the Army's Daughters and in 1994 it was given to the State domain.
Damaged in the Second World War, it is today open to the public in order to fund its maintenance.

Monumento Nazionale al Carabiniere

The National Monument to the policeman is standing in the garden of the Royal Palace of Turin. It is one of hundreds of monuments erected after World War I to honor the sacrifice of the fallen.

The monument was designed and built by Edoardo Rubino of Turin and is divided into 3 parts:
- a 25m podium where they are represented, with reliefs in bronze, the main tasks carried out by the police in times of peace and war;
- a bronze statue of a policeman;
- a pillar on top with an impressive sculptural group, also in bronze, which idealizes the Oath.

Piazza Arbarello is a rather elongated piazza along Corso Siccardi, in the center of the piazza at the end near to Via Cernaia is a series of old books stalls which is quite unique, as different from those in Via Po, these are under their own structure in the open space.
